NCMD Seminar Series Presents ‘Temporomandibular Disorders and the Autonomic Nervous System’
This week's seminar welcomed James Allison, a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Fellow and Honorary Clinical Fellow in Oral Surgery at Newcastle University.
James is a dentist and clinical research fellow, supported by a doctoral fellowship from the Wellcome Trust, with a clinical background in oral and maxillofacial surgery. His research focuses on orofacial pain, in particular temporomandibular disorders, and the contribution of the autonomic nervous system.
James presented a talk on ‘Temporomandibular Disorders and the Autonomic Nervous System’. Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of common musculoskeletal disorders affecting the jaw and masticatory muscles. People with TMD often have other symptoms, including those related to dysautonomia, as well as comorbidities including fibromyalgia, migraine, and depression. James went on to explain TMD, the impact of the autonomic nervous system, and considered what this might mean for novel treatments.
Thank you James for presenting this week!
