What is it like to be a doctor in a research setting?

We regularly have psychiatry trainees who spend time with us in the CaPE Clinic. Their role includes, but is not limited to, conducting assessments and participating in our multi-disciplinary team meetings. These pre-screening assessments are in consideration of the current research trials recruiting through the CaPE Clinic at that time. At the moment, these include ASCEnD and COMP006. It is a great way for trainees to get involved in mood disorders research and learn more about clinical trials. We also have a number of incoming trials coming to the CaPE Clinic soon that range beyond mood disorders.

We have helped a number of trainees to access the NIHR Associate Principal Investigator scheme and some have stayed on working in CaPE on their research days after qualifying, with some becoming Principal Investigators.

We surveyed CaPE doctors about their experiences of being involved in research:

75% strongly agreed/agreed that it improved their knowledge of research

75% strongly agreed/agreed that they felt well supported and supervised

  • "[the supervision] is really thorough and supportive"
  • "[the supervision] is consistent and helpful"

Though understandably, some doctors find it hard to attend group supervision due to the nature of their clinical roles.

Please do get in touch with our CaPE Clinic if this interests you.
