What is an antagonist?

Like an agonist, an antagonist is a drug that binds to receptors. However, instead of activating the receptor, an antagonist just sits on the receptor. By doing so, it prevents the body’s naturally occurring chemical messenger from binding to the receptor thus preventing it from working.
