What is an agonist?
Naturally occurring chemicals within the body (e.g., serotonin) bind to receptors that are molecules receiving signals for a cell. An agonist is a drug or substance that binds to the receptor, and which produces the same physiological reaction as the naturally occurring chemical. In other words, the agonist mimics the body’s own chemical messenger.
