About the study
Lithium is an effective treatment for bipolar disorder, but the exact mechanisms behind how it works are uncertain. Patients with bipolar may have an abnormality in their retinas, making them more sensitive to light. It is theorised that lithium may work by altering the retina's response to light, stabilising patient's irregular circadian rhythms.
What does the study involve?
This study will test whether people with bipolar are hypersensitive to evening light, and whether Lithium counteracts this. This study aims to improve understanding of the mechanisms behind bipolar disorder, and our understanding of how lithium works to treat it.
Who is involved?
For this study, Team Lithium will be working with the University of Edinburgh.
