Switching lithium preparations

Lithium preparations photo 2

Lithium is a very effective treatment for bipolar disorder but if stopped suddenly, there is a risk of relapse. In 2020, the supply of the most commonly prescribed form of lithium (Priadel) was threatened and there was uncertainty about how best to switch between different tablet forms. We completed a national survey of those who switched preparations of lithium before supplies of Priadel were once more assured. In those taking their lithium regularly and who did not have a change in dose on switching, blood levels were similar between the two most common forms of lithium carbonate (Camcolit and Priadel). These results should increase the confidence in switching preparations should supplies be disrupted in the future.
