NCMD Public Engagement Event 'Alcohol and Drug Misuse'

The cluny w1050

The Northern Centre for Mood Disorders has once again opened up the world of Mental Health to the community by bringing current issues in Mood Disorders to discussion with the theme of 'Alcohol and Drug Misuse'. Professor Eilish Gilvarry led the talks by introducing and connecting the main speakers with her stimulating words. Dr Andrea Hearn, Consultant Psychiatrist in Addiction Services, talked about the current affairs with illicit drug use with a special warning about “legal highs” and the misuse of prescribed and over the counter medication. Professor Eileen Kaner, Professor of Public Health & Primary Care Research, discussed the difficulties of implementing Public Health measures to reduce alcohol misuse as well as the importance of screening for alcohol misuse and the evidence for the use of brief interventions. It was a well participated event by both professionals and members of the community who had their own stories to share.

This event is free and open to all.
