Dear [add name of MP]

Issue: poor access to innovative treatments for people with depression and bipolar disorder

I am contacting you regarding an Early Day Motion being tabled in the Commons (see below).

[If possible, set out your interest in treatments for MH problems eg service user, carer, family friend, MH clinician/ practitioner. The more personalised, the better. You may be willing to share your own story/ stories – such stories are known to be a good way of engaging a MP’s attention].

  • There are innovative medications, neurostimulation and psychological treatments for treating depression and bipolar which are effective and safe but are inaccessible to people using the NHS, for example, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
  • Their availability would be beneficial for the individuals (not least for the relief of suffering), their carers, and help grow the economy – all to the benefit of our society. Powerful illustrations of their benefit of such treatments can be heard from patient’s reflections: Susan’s story regarding TMS and Pauline’s regarding transcranial directcurrent stimulation (tDCS). [If you have difficulty accessing these, you can find them at https://mood-disorders.co.uk/parliament-campaign]
  • However, there are barriers at all levels of the health and regulatory system that are impeding their implementation and accessibility in the NHS.
  • I would like the government and DHSC to address these barriers to ensure that existing safe and effective treatments are made accessible and available to people with depression and bipolar disorder in the NHS.

I ask that you demonstrate your support for their accessibility across the NHS to help improve people’s lives by signing the Early Day Motion “Care for people with depression and bipolar disorder” (EDM No 35 13 May 2026) laid down in the House of Commons by Tim Farron, MP.

If you would prefer not to sign the Early Day Motion then would you write directly to the Minister for Health about the issue. If you are uncomfortable about doing either, it would be helpful if you could let me know why.

If you would like more information

Please contact Prof Hamish McAllister-Williams, Newcastle University (hamish.mcallister-williams@newcastle.ac.uk)

Yours sincerely,

The Early Day Motion [EDM No 35 13 May 2026]

“That this House notes that depression and bipolar disorder are major causes of disability, with substantial implications for patients' quality of life; further notes the impact of depression and bipolar on employment opportunities, the UK economy and the NHS; recognises that although innovative treatments exist, such as medication and neuromodulation to psychological therapies, too many people still face barriers in accessing timely, evidence-based care; believes that improving access to care is essential for improving patient outcomes and reducing avoidable hospital admissions; calls on the government to address systemic obstacles to help improve the quality of life of people living with bipolar and depression.”
