Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress - 1-4th July 2019, London
NCMD member Dr Alan Currie was recently in London at the Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress on 1st - 4th July 2019. At a symposium on mood disorders he presented his thoughts on the concept of treatment resistant depression. He reviewed the many treatment options that are available and their place in therapy. This included a review of some of the ‘non-standard’ treatments that are only available in specialist clinics such as the Regional Affective Disorders Service (RADS) in Newcastle where he works. He also discussed the treatment approaches that can be most useful and appropriate including ‘recovery practice’ and chronic illness management principles. He was accompanied at the symposium by Prof Allan Young who did his early work in Newcastle but now works at King’s College in London and Dr Paul Stokes also of King’s College. Professor Young spoke on cognitive symptoms in treatment resistant mood disorders and Dr Stokes on treatment resistance in bipolar depression. The session was chaired by Professor Tony Cleare who is Professor of Psychopharmacology & Affective Disorders at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College London.
