Sports psychiatrist's scores new role at Sunderland

Alan Currie was recently appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Sunderland in the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences. Alan who is a consultant psychiatrist in the Regional Affective Disorders Service (RADS) is also Chair of the Royal College of Psychiatrists group on Sports and Exercise Psychiatry. His inaugural lecture was held at the University on Friday 16th February and entitled 'Sport, exercise and psychiatry: why exercise is good for your mental health but being an athlete isn't.' Alan presented work on the health benefits of physical activity as well as an overview of psychiatric morbidity in elite sport. He hopes to continue his work in both areas and will be using experiences and connections built up over many years to support work already taking place in the department, as well as introducing new ideas and projects.
